REACH’s South African Rural Women’s Day Campaign Concept
In 2003, the Executive Director of REACH, Joanie FREDERICKS, conducted a study on sexual harassment in the Western Cape region of South Africa. The research exposed the high prevalence of sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and HIV/AIDS in the Southern Western Cape’s rural farming communities. What’s more, the study revealed the lack of programs and absence of support services to address and assist those whose lives are affected by these social problems.
In 2005, the results of the study inspired Joanie FREDERICKS and Claudia LOPES to join forces to establish REACH, an organization that seeks to sensitize rural farming communities and other relevant stakeholders on the issues of sexual harassment and sexual violence, through the implementation of programmes that encourage ethical, social and personal awareness and development.
In 2006, REACH initiated the South African Rural Women’s Day campaign -- a day to honour the rural farm-working women who are often neglected from celebrations on National Women’s Day. The campaign provides a platform for members of farming communities to vocalize the issues that they face every day, such as domestic abuse, sexual harassment and alcohol abuse.
South African Rural Women’s Day has been extremely successful, with over 4,000 people participating since the campaign began in 2006. Each year, the men, women and children of local farming communities come out to enjoy live entertainment, listen to guest speakers and celebrate the woman who is nominated to be the “face of REACH” – a woman elected from REACH’s beneficiary farming community who exemplifies empowerment and triumph in the face of adversity.
In 2008, REACH added the March for Peace to the campaign. The march is symbolic of REACH’s vision for farming communities: an empowered community that is willing to band together and create a place that is socially aware, independent, responsible, self-caring and free of sexual harassment and violence. The march commences the campaign each year, leading the guests to the venue where live entertainment, guest speakers and catered meals await them.
Our SARWD campaign has truly scaled up to become THE EVENT that farm workers across the Western Cape prepare for the whole year. Testimony to this is the fact that the campaign continues to draw more attention and guests each year since its inception in 2006.
Our campaigns, workshops and other projects continue to highlight the high incidences of abuse and violence against women and the youth, and the devastating impact that it has on these victims and their families; as well as how much misinformation on domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape and HIV/AIDS still exists in rural farming communities. Through the campaign, we are able to reach thousands of people, thus effectively spreading knowledge and placing a focus on the issues faced by members of farming communities. Ultimately, our vision for these communities is to be empowered, socially aware, independent, responsible, self-caring and free of sexual harassment and sexual violence. The SARWD campaign brings us one step closer each year to making that vision a reality. This day entails the participation of other NGOs, organizations, government officials, rural community members and leaders, and our special guests, Rural Women. We rely on the communities as well as government departments and private sectors in delivering great campaigns.
The day will go as follow:
This year the campaign will take place in Paarl on 22 August 2009 at the Dal Josaphat Stadium. The theme is, “Looking forward with hope that I can be free….” It focuses on all the interlinking factors; HIV/AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse and other factors that lead to sexual abuse/harassment on farms. We will begin this event at 9am at the Spar on Van Der Stel, where we will march to the stadium.
We are expected to have over 2500 adult guests and over 600 children this year, thus making this the biggest campaign in REACH’s history. In having an overwhelming number of children coming with their parents to the event we have decided to once again hold a special event just for them – where they can be entertained for the day through arts and crafts, sports, and educational talks.
This campaign is going to be a total success, and we will be able to once again showcase our success all over South Africa and abroad through our international partners. So far we have been contacted by SABC News 3, who will broadcast this entire event from start to finish on the day of the campaign. We are excited to have publicity for our sponsors as well as the opportunity to mobilize our celebration of rural women across the country of South Africa.
