PET PROJECTS/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES:
THE OUBAAI HYATT HOTEL
“Oubaai is extremely pleased to make such a huge economic contribution to the southern Cape,” says resort general manager William McIntyre. “In the building phase of the hotel, 600 construction jobs will be created. And once the hotel is operational another 200 permanent service industry jobs will have been added to the local economy. More people in the area will be earning monthly salaries and that alone has a knock-on effect on the region before taking any tourism benefits into consideration.”
He is especially pleased that a business such as the Global Hyatt Corporation, with its formidable international marketing reach, has chosen to extend its footprint to Oubaai. “There are five star hotels in the Garden Route, but none with the global clout and standing enjoyed by Hyatt. It is extremely exciting from a tourism perspective because Hyatt has an enormous client base throughout the world. Marketing Oubaai as a destination will take on a whole new complexion with Hyatt as the operational partner.”
The resort will be Hyatt’s second hotel in South Africa, following Hyatt Regency Johannesburg, which opened in October 1995. The Hyatt Regency Oubaai will consist of 100 spacious guest rooms and suites, a Regency Club, all day dining, a pool and pool bar, a specialty restaurant, a specialty pub, an exclusive spa and a conference centre. Hyatt operates at various first class golf resorts worldwide, inclusive of the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It operates 750 hotels and resorts in more than 45 countries.
Mohamed Fahmy, managing director of MAK Hotel Holdings, a member of the MA Kharafi Group, explains what influenced the choice of partner. “Hyatt’s commitment to luxury and its international presence has given us the initiative to take the group on board as the hotel of choice for Oubaai. We are confident that the global travelers coming to South Africa for Soccer World Cup 2010 will be able to experience a one-of-a-kind African getaway with the availability of first class leisure facilities.”
Gebhard Rainer, managing director of Hyatt Europe, Africa and the Middle East, is as excited by the new development. “South Africa is one of the world’s fastest growing holiday and business destinations with endless opportunities for visitors of all interests. The opening of Hyatt Regency Oubaai is part of Global Hyatt’s initiative to expand its brand in Africa. We are particularly proud to be associated with this development, in an idyllic setting. The opening of our second property in South Africa will increase Hyatt’s presence in the region; we look forward to welcoming our loyal guests to South Africa.”
The hotel complex will also feature a retail section with boutique shops, and specialty stores.
