The KZN Institute’s core focus areas are as follow:
      · Capacity building for local municipalities
      · Poverty alleviation
      · Job creation
      · Women empowerment
      · Promotion of the culture and tradition
      · Local economic development “LED”

o Due to its strategic location the Institute can service the IDT’s targeted district municipalities (ISRDP nodes) which include Umkhanyakhude, Zululand as well as Ugu.
o By assisting in the channelling of resources the KZN Institute will be able to enhance the institutional delivery capacities of identified municipalities.
o The documentation of our projects that will include the interpretation, analyzing and publishing of data will assist stakeholders in its social research capacity as well as the targeted communities per se.
o The stature and facilities of UniZul provide a neutral platform to bridge the gap between the locally elected Councillors and traditional authorities. Willingness to travel to isolated areas and assist the communities are not excluded.
o By participating in the SAQA accredited academic programmes offered by the University of Zululand, participants of the locally marginalized sector of our rural areas can educate themselves at their own pace and own needs. This will improve their quality of life and attribute to local economic developments.
o In order to take ownership of our local communities the KZN Institute can assist, partake, monitor and report to relevant stakeholders
